Springfield has advanced to the PIAA Class AAA championship game Friday morning at Penn State University. Note that the game time has changed. Originally scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch, Springfield-Bethlehem Catholic will get under way at 10 a.m., bright and early, in order to accommodate the Cougars’ seniors on graduation day.

Some notes about the big game:

  • Springfield (22-4) is seeking its first state title in softball. The Cougars last made it to the state final in 2007, when they fell to Susquehannock, 3-2.
  • Springfield is the District One runnerup, losing to Radnor in the district final. Consequently, Radnor was eliminated from the state playoffs by Bethlehem Catholic, 1-0, in the quarterfinal round.
  • Springfield is a young team. The Cougars start three seniors (designated player Kaity Baumann, right fielder Emily Crockarell and third baseman Lauren Scarpato).
  • Junior pitcher Courtney Scarpato has started every inning of the state playoffs, including a shutout of St. Mary’s in the quarterfinals.
  • Bethlehem Catholic (20-6), or Beca, is the District 11 champion. Becca sophomore pitcher Elyse Cuttic no-hit Radnor in the teams’ quarterfinal match up. In the semifinals, only two Lansdale Catholic hitters reached base against her.
